Meet the Directors
sandy gray & steve brinkhurst
Partners in life as well as partners in business has seen Sandy and Stephen team up in the reinvention of The Entertainment Company. The new look company now has a revitalised approach with a fantastic balance of artistic and technical knowledge, which work hand in hand to produce top-level entertainment.
With Sandy’s well known artistic flair and Stephen’s technical ability there is a synergy in each project, with each providing a sounding board for each other which ultimately enhances the finished project.
Sandy brings to the company a passion for excellence, stemming from a background in classical ballet. Her love of performance has seen Sandy in many stage shows as a dancer and also featured roles, as well as choreographer for such shows as “A Chorus Line”, “Evita”, “Hercules – The Pantomime”, “Peter Rabbit” and “High School Musical” amongst many others.
The formation of The Entertainment Company allowed the diverse creative talents of Sandy to be displayed, and gives opportunity for the many styles of dance and choreography to be shown. From Jazz to Ballet, Hip Hop to Contemporary, Sandy combines with the unique and individual talents of her dancers, to produce outstanding pieces for the wildly varied tastes that the company’s clients demand.
The mix of singers, dancers, actors and other creative artists gives rise to the need for a “out of the box” mind-set when conceiving ideas. This is where Sandy comes into her own. Her vast experience on and off stage gives The Entertainment Company the edge in entertainment, be it large scale corporate or intimate settings.
Sandy also prides herself in the work she does with schools. Having written the NCEA level 1,2 and 3 programmes at Rangi Ruru she also devised and produced major shows for them. “Fosse”, “A Cats World”, “Evening Of Dance”, “Quintessence” and “Nimbus”.
She is passionate about working with dance in low decile shows and as such is an annual contributor the project, “Dancing Like The Stars”, run by Dance and Performance, and also produces/choreographs work for the city’s annual “Body Festival”.
Stephens’ contribution to the company is his technical based input in ensuring the events look/sound/feel right. Designing the lights and sound for the shows and events gives Sandy the confidence to know that what she wants to achieve artistically, will be fulfilled. As a Director of Musical Theatre and an accomplished onstage performer, his knowledge is complimentary to Sandy’s when devising a potential show or “look” for clients.
His background is also onstage based, which he feels gives him a perfect grounding in the “art” of design. Having worked and performed with many local and national companies, Stephen has observed and been part of many creative design processes and assimilates this knowledge base into the work he does for The Entertainment Company. Primarily a lighting designer and operator, he has worked with Sandy on many of her projects as well as for a large number of dance schools and Body Festival clients’ pieces. His lighting of contemporary works is particularly significant.
Full time employment at CPIT as the technician for the National Academy for Singing and Performing Arts (NASDA) has seen Stephens knowledge grow in many areas as he is keen to explore further growth in the design sector for the company.
